The Big Thought

Many corporate learning teams have been slow to evolve their philosophies, understand the value they can bring and how they structure their teams to provide the best service to their people. In this post, I’m going to focus the spotlight on the structure of a learning and development team. Perhaps, the first question should be if we even call it an L&D team anymore. But I’ll leave that debate for another day. This is how I would build an L&D team in this era to achieve the following:

  1. Be successful (that’s kinda obvious right)

  2. Provide value to its people

  3. Provide a return on investment to the business

  4. Support the talent cycle to build homegrown talent.

I’ve spoken before about the place of L&D in the workplace today at length. The ultimate goal of any learning function (for me) is to enable and support people to be better humans. Basically, we are in service of our audience. In the corporate world, we also add the dimension of supporting workplace performance and enabling people to build the skills which will allow a company to achieve its goals.Corporate L&D is about making an impact on the bottom line. There is no getting away from that, no matter how much it sucks to say.
